What Do I Need to Know about First United Methodist Church?

First of all, you need to know that we really believe that business about God so loving the world that he gave his only begotten Son. That means that though there are many important truths we ought to know about our God, none is greater or higher or more important than that of love.  That's why one of our pastor's favorite mottoes is that the Good News generally ought to sound like good news!

You also need to know that ours is a United Methodist Church. That means that although we share certain convictions with many, many Christians around the world and throughout the ages, there are certain marks that do make us distinctive. For instance, we are a connectional church rather than a congregational church. That means that our church and our pastor are accountable to responsible parties beyond the local church in addition to our accountability to one another. Additionally, we are a sacramental church. Basically, that means that we believe that our God is mighty enough to take perfectly ordinary things like water and bread, and use those ordinary things to bless us with extraordinary grace and love.

In a more practical vein, you need to know that our primary worship service takes place at 10:00 a.m. every Sunday morning.  In an even more practical vein, we are located at 785 Ross Street in Heflin (directly across from Piggly Wiggly).

Though there is an order of worship that we follow (our worship bulletin will guide you in this), there are also opportunities within that order for us to share and to respond. Every first Sunday of the month we also celebrate the Lord's Supper.  Everyone is invited to participate in the Lord's Supper, and we do our best make sure everyone who desires to share is guided through the process. There is no dress code at First United Methodist Church. Some people choose to worship in a tie or even a suit, while others prefer jeans or khakis.

If you are a parent, we do have a time in worship for the children called The Feeding of the Lambs. Following this time, the children are taken to Children's Church, where they will share in lessons and activities designed especially for them.  Your children are invited to go to Children's Church, but they are also more than welcome to stay in the sanctuary with you. Also, we offer a nursery for our youngest children.

Of course, there is much more to know about us.  If you have specific questions, you are always welcome to call us at 256-463-2441, or email us at heflinfirst@heflinfirstumc.org.
